Curator Flemming Kaul gives an introduction to The Sun Chariot. More about The Sun Chariot: http://natmus.dk/en/historisk-viden/d...

The Trundholm sun chariot, is a Nordic Bronze Age artifact discovered in Denmark. It is a representation of the sun chariot, a bronze statue of a horse and a large bronze disk, which are placed on a device with spoked wheels. The disks were then decorated with punches and gravers with zones of motifs of concentric circles, with bands of zig-zag decoration between borders. The gold side has an extra outer zone which may represent rays, and also a zone with concentric circles linked by looping bands that "instead of flowing in one direction, progress like the steps of the dance, twice forward and once back". The main features of the horse are also highly decorated. The two sides of the disk have been interpreted as an indication of a belief that the sun is drawn across the heavens from East to West during the day, presenting its bright side to the Earth and returns from West to East during the night, when the dark side is being presented to the Earth. A continuation around a globe would have the same result. It is thought that the chariot was pulled around during religious rituals to demonstrate the motion of the sun in the heavens. The synodic cycle is the time that elapses between two successive conjunctions of an object in the sky, such as a specific star, with the sun. It is the time that elapses before the object will reappear at the same point in the sky when observed from the Earth, so it is the apparent orbital period observed from Earth. He asserts his belief that this demonstrates that the disk was designed by a person with some measure of astronomic knowledge and that the sculpture may have functioned as a calendar.

Harwich, Norfolk, and Denmark. M/S of a ferry, 'England', which is bound for Denmark. M/S cars boarding ferry. Inside the bar is being prepared. The ferry is seen leaving the port. A chef helps make final preparations to the food platters made ready for passengers. Guests are served at a table, and others are served cocktail style drinks. On deck, people are wrapped up warm. The ferry arrives at Copenhagen. There is a tightly edited sequence of the Tivoli Gardens, various towers and spires and a statue of Hand Christian Anderson, and storks nesting on rooftops. A woman walks through the deserted cobbled streets of Denmark's oldest town, Ribe. We move on to the fishing port of Esbjerg, where we see fish being landed from fishing vessels and sorted at the quayside. The packed crates are laid out in a warehouse for sale, and men walk over the crates and their fishy contents, hammering out prices with the auctioneer (01:46:55). Next we see crowds and the track at a trotting race with horses and two wheeled carriage. A flag is waved for the off. This is contrasted with two oxen pulling a cart at Aarhus, North Jutland, where it looks as if time has stood still. A gaggle of geese run by. There are shots of the timber framed houses and women in traditional dress. Visitors look at craft shops which have been recreated. M/S signs for book binders and rope makers shops. A paddle steamer makes its way in the waters of Jutland's lake district. C/U of the engine mechanism working. There are homes seen on the waterside. M/S of a man at work thatching, bunching the bales and handing them up to another on the roof working on the next piece of thatch. Outside a house, some people are served with food, a girl pours a beer (01:49:52). The island of Fano is now renowned for its beach, - it was used by Malcolm Campbell in 1924 for a land speed record attempt. At the beach, we see a car driven onto the beach, and people running down to the sea in swimming costumes. Some people play beach croquet. Finally we see a train being driven onto a ferry, and we see the ferry move away from dock as the doors at the stern slowly closes. The ferry is on its way back to the main island of Zealand. Cuts exist - see other record. FILM ID:327.07

Denmark. Husband, wife and two children enjoy their boat trip - channel cross. They land in Denmark, in the town of Esbjerg. Family disembarks and starts to enjoy continental goods - pork sausages. Pigs (in all shapes and forms) are Danish major export product. Family then drives to their holiday destination - a farm. Nice Danish countryside on the way, great farm. Danes are very warm and friendly. Several shots of farm activities, rounding cows etc. Little boy enjoys driving tractor and riding a pony. Family is stationed at the farm but they visit various places. In Aarhus they watch a great yellow tram and visit the old town - open air museum. Over fifty buildings from across Denmark were brought to Aarhus to create Hans Christian Andersen's Denmark. Little girl eats gingerbread cookies. In Tivoli amusement park in Copenhagen children enjoy various rides and watch trapeze artists performance. Family takes a boat trip in Denmark's older paddle steamer Hjelen, they go for a swim at on of the beaches of Fano. Danish yachtsman is seen sailing - great scene. Legoland in village of Billund is the next destination. It is a model village built entirely from lego 'bricks' - fantastic! Children love it. Family goes back to farm enjoying a meal in a garden while their hosts do their work. Several shots of pigs and piglets - beautiful shot of a little boy surrounded by piglets - he talks to them. Most of Danish pigs end up in Britain. Lorries filled with bacon are ready to go to England. Family boards a ferry to go home. They are on a deck watching Danish coast disappearing. While children sleep, couple watch a sunset at sea. FILM ID:465.01

More info about travel to Denmark: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/den... Just outside of Copenhagen is Frederiksborg castle, built in the early 1600s by Denmark's greatest king, Christian IV. Many consider this "Danish Versailles" to be the grandest castle in all of Scandinavia. Inside the castle you'll find an excellent museum of Danish history.

More info about travel to Copenhagen: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/den... Copenhagen has lots of idyllic parks. Its most royal is the King's Garden surrounding the Rosenborg Castle, summer residence to Denmark's "big personality" king, Christian IV, who ruled from 1588 until 1648. The castle's basement holds cases of treasures to dazzle visitors, including the finest renaissance crown in Europe, from Christian IV's coronation in 1596.

After nearly 70 years of discussions, Sweden and Denmark finally united literally with the Oresund Bridge, a gorgeous wonder that tunnels into the sea.

In Denmark, they’re the Guard Hussars, a highly mobile mechanised infantry unit. But when deployed, they become Vidar Company, a name that harkens back to Norse mythology while honouring the unit’s more recent history in Afghanistan. Deployed to NATO’s battlegroup in Estonia earlier this year, Vidar Company represents Denmark’s commitment to collective defence.
