I don't know but I think both Neolithic Farmers and Metal Age Invaders were more advanced than European Hunter Gatherers.

Hunter-Gatherers were primitive people, who hunted and lived off the land --before farmers introduced agriculture & different groups brought sheep, swine, etc.
The metal-age invaders, in turn, had learned to ride horses & used their skills in metalwork to produce better weapons.
