I'm against the union:
- Romania isn't politically-administratively reformed enough and econominically not developed enough. What would a union with Moldova bring to Romania's economy? What effect would have on its market? How will the Romanian authorities reassure the population and especially the pro-Russian population that opposes the union? How will the Romanian government work with another strong minority (the Russian one)?
- Hypothetically speaking, what would happen after the EU dissolves? Would Bessarabia return to Russia's sphere of influence? Will they bring us with them too?
- Culture. Let's not kid ourselves now, cultural differences exist between Romanians and Moldovans from the Republic, whether we like it to hear or not.
- Ethnic minorities I wouldn't want in my country. A lot Moldovans are mixed and have relatives in Russia, Transnistria etc.
- The pro-Russian population does not identify with Romania and European values and both Romania and the EU are seen as the weak link.
- We don't know what the reaction of the Great Powers would be. What if we fall in the same category as Russia because we are "annexing territories"? A union with Moldova could also be used as an excuse for other territorial "claims" of other European states. For example, Transnistria will have an additional justification for joining the Russian Federation, which would put us in a situation where we have a common border with Russia.
- Autonomy. There is a very high risk of intensifying autonomy demands. Excluding the frozen conflict in Transnistria that must be treated separately, we can expect problems in Gagauzia, Szeklely Land and maybe even Banat or even the whole of Transylvania .
I'm sure Romanians would change their mind if they'd hear this. The decision to unite Romania and Rep of Moldova should be a rational one first and foremost, not just a sentimental one.
