Belgians themselves disagree about the subject of identity, even Flemish alone. The subject of Belgium is the most difficult for me, albeit interesting regardless.

Rational discussion is often difficult because one person is a Belgian nationalist (usually a liberal kind of nationalism, but tends to - due to opposition of Flemish nationalism - have subtle and periodic illiberal streaks) and the other a Flemish one and within the latter you have those who like the Netherlands and those who don't. And you also have Belgian nationalists who like the Netherlands of course as a neighboring and similar country.

It's quite a stressful country at that. I believe the highest suicide rate of Western Europe is partly due to this. In Belgium people are more hardwired to bottle up their frustrations and beat around the bushes.
But it's still one of the most prosperous countries of Europe regardless with the highest life standard.
