Default Scottish Fishing Lobby Turns on Johnson for Failing Industry

Scottish Fishing Lobby Turns on Johnson for Failing Industry

A Scottish fishing lobby group that once hailed Brexit as an opportunity slammed U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s trade accord with the European Union, labeling it a “desperately poor deal” for fishermen.

Elspeth Macdonald, chief executive officer of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, said the accord had failed to secure an adequate increase in the country’s share of the catch, and had added major obstacles to getting produce to market.

“There is huge disappointment and a great deal of anger about your failure to deliver on promises made repeatedly to this industry,” she wrote in a public letter to Johnson on Friday. “This industry now finds itself in the worst of both worlds.”

Scotland’s fishing industry has been badly disrupted in the days following Britain’s exit from the EU’s single market and customs union, with new customs checks severely curtailing deliveries to the bloc. Some trawlers have even chosen to land their catches in Denmark to avoid chaos at the border.

“Your deal has failed the industry in the short term,” Macdonald said. “Many in the seafood supply chain fear they will not survive.”

The Tory Government sold out one of the few groups in Scotland that actually did vote for them.

I'd imagine the North East will show them the boot now.

The Scotch – what a verminous race!"; "It’s time Hadrian’s Wall was refortified, to pen them in a ghetto on the other side"; "The nation deserves not merely isolation, but comprehensive extermination".

Those were some of the lines from a poem published in The Spectator in 2004 which has been recirculating on the web over the past week – but what was Boris Johnson's role in relation to them?

Some of those who have been sharing the quotations online have labelled them as being direct from the pen of the Tory leadership frontrunner ... which isn't quite right. But he certainly approved them.

Isn't the fishing agreement with the EU to be reassessed in 2 years? If so, have some patience. There was always going to be compromises made initially.
Nine out of ten concerns are completely unfounded.

It is a transition period, think fishermen get an extra 15% in the first period, a no deal would have shut out Danish, Dutch, French etc fishermen of UK waters completely threatening their jobs.

UK fishing waters have subsidised other European fishermen for a few decades, as Iceland's waters did inflating the size of UK fishing industry prior to that. It will take a few years to build the infrastructure back up again to cope with increased opportunity.

After the transition period the percentage of fish can be renegotiated. It isnt ideal for Scottish or English fishermen, as they wanted all the catch, but this would have threatened financial ruin in most of the other European North sea fleets. Nonetheless it is 15% more than under the EU rules (UK didn't have much control of its own waters)

As with all these current issues politicians, journalists etc look for things they want to see, seeing things through a prism, that fits their agenda.

The red tape, crates left rotting in certain ports is due to a difficult few weeks of adjustment, according to mainstream media (who heavily supported remaining in the EU) it is an indication to them that everything is a disaster, because this is how they want to see it and want it to be, it is the same how issues are presented by journalists etc elsewhere too

After Brexit, the call for a second independence referendum is likely to become louder in Scotland. Brexit and the Corona crisis give supporters of Scottish independence more hope than ever for the separation from Great Britain.

British fishermen lament Brexit hurdles Contrary to government promises in London about Brexit benefits, British fishermen are reporting difficulties and financial concerns on many fronts. Brexit happened on January 31st 2020 when the United Kingdom formally left the institutions of the European Union.

Scottish, Welsh and English fishermen and haulage companies have driven to Westminster to protest the new Brexit red tape that is crippling to their industry. This is just the first of perhaps many protests by many industries that have been affected by Brexit. https://youtu.be/VuR4LzB2fdY https://twitter.com/aileen_boughen/st... https://twitter.com/jarmodj/status/13...

Here is a summary of the mess so far. From government ministers not doing their job to the reality of leaving the customs union and single market becoming painfully obvious to Brexiteers. This is just the beginning, it will unfortunately get much worse. Original Story: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews...

A good two weeks after Brexit, more and more British companies are complaining about the trade agreement with the EU. The bureaucracy costs time and money. Anger is particularly great among fishermen.

Angry businessmen in London are claiming Brexit is killing the shellfish industry, as lorries descended on Westminster to protest against the export problems they are now facing. Exports of fresh fish and seafood have been severely disrupted by new border controls since the UK’s official depart from the European Union and the end of the Brexit transitional period. Fishermen are claiming the UK government is at fault, as FRANCE 24’s Philip Turle explains.

I think it was about 7-8 trucks from a shellfish distribution company, they aren't fishermen by the way but work in the industry suply chain. The owner of the distribution company is a personal friend of Ian Blackford, the leader of the Scottish National Party in Westminster.

There are distribution issues but it'll be sorted (one can hope) and the affected industries compensated in the meantime. Meanwhile 1600 deaths resported today, a new record

Good to see French news jumping onto this, of course. It is hardly Paris in the summer.
