Yes, but my point is that English has been even more expansionist/successful globally than have French, Dutch, German, Polish, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish or Italian, yet it hasn't even entirely been able to stamp out other languages within the British Isles.

Also, it should be added that the debate as to whether minority languages should be preserved and promoted doesn't easily slip into the Left/Right divide. Although many on the Left do like to side with languages, peoples and cultures that have been historically marginalised and oppressed, there is another strand to the Left that dislikes cultural and linguistic differences because it sees them as impediments to 'progress', 'brotherhood' and 'universalism'. (In Britain, such thinkers include Kenan Malik, Polly Toynbee and the online magazine spiked). On the Right, those who take a more centralist/imperialist perspective (whether English, French, Castilian etc.) tend to regard minority languages as a pointless annoyance that will hopefully whither away, while those with a more Romantic perspective will at least tolerate if not champion them.

The launch of S4C, the Welsh speaking TV Channel, was a key element to keep the language going too.

I think you do have the best of both worlds in that people can switch from Welsh to English depending on situation. It is remarkable how it survived all those centuries and actually managed to sustain itself in the last 30 odd years.

I see that the Welsh language is preserved more than Scottish Gaelic and even Irish, the Irish language is disappearing faster than Welsh.

Not in all of them, for example in Spain and Switzerland (which have bilingual areas) there is no bad treatment of other languages.

In Spain the Franco regime severely restricted them.

All part and parcel of that vacuous ideology called 'Progress'.
