“Corona jail” – German state plans to hold COVID rule-breakers in refugee detention centre

A regional state in Germany has announced plans to detain repeat COVID rule-breakers in a fenced-off section of a refugee detention centre, according to German tabloid Bild.

The regional government of Saxony in east Germany confirmed plans to convert the facility in Stauffenbergallee, north Dresden into a detention centre for citizens who refuse to self-isolate and follow the rules – a “covid jail” as the German tabloid aptly describes it.

The building was initially built in 2017 to accommodate the tens of thousands of refugees that headed to the country on Angela Merkel’s invitation at the peak of Europe’s migrant crisis.

Germany’s Ministry of Social Affairs explained how the plans would work, starting with a reprimand for a first offence, then a fine, followed by a court order for a mandated stay at the facility for repeat offenders.

The measures are designed “to protect third parties because of the unruly behaviour of the [offender]”.

Similar plans are being considered in the south-west German state of Baden-Württemberg, where two clinics will be used for those who refuse to quarantine. The buildings “would be permanently monitored by a security service”, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Stuttgart.

It is being reported in Germany that Angela Merkel is considering a “mega-lockdown” across the country.

“Further measures must be taken,” insisted Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday evening ahead of a federal-state summit on Tuesday to discuss tightening existing measures.

The new restrictions being drawn up by the Chancellery would include a night-time curfew similar to that already imposed in neighbouring France although a suspension in public transport being reported by MailOnline today is “off the table”, according to Bild.
