In general Balkans isn't very dangerous, it's just poor and underdeveloped. I think ex-Soviet sphere is less safe than Balkans, and ofcourse various west European cities with lots of immigrants.

The sad thing is that most western europeans just "know" Bulgaria through the gipsys you rightfully throw out of your county, that then wander of to Germany, Austria, Holland etc. Few look past that and know Bulgarians = surely no gippos but ordinary europeans.

Me too. North Caucasus can be very dangerous for foreigners in places like Chechenya or Ingushetia.

I watched Bald and bankrupt series about Caucasus and it turned out the locals are very hospitable people, they offered him food, shelter and invited him in their homes to stay overnight

I watched it too. They are hospitable, but it's still not safe compared to Europe, there were kidnappings in the region. From what I gather some more obscure parts of these Republics aren't even controlled by federal government, including parts of Dagestan.
