Probably due to a poorer healthcare system.

Thats because a lot of people having constant trip and cant relax because of everyday stress. It causes a lot of cardiovascular problems, besides fucks up your metabolism, which causes cancer.

It's mostly because of the lung cancer. Western Europe has a 20 year head start in regards to smoking reduction compared to Eastern Europe. Lung cancer is deadly but quite preventable.

Yeah, most cancer death rate reduction in Western Europe and the US in the past 30 years is due to smoking prevention/cessation. There is still progress to be made. Lung cancer prevalence shut up in the 1930s from very low rates, again due to smoking (promoted in the movies).

That's a good point, but Eastern Europe has also a high prevalence of liver cancer due to alcohol consumption, something that is not common in Turkey.

So yes, both smoking and alcohol consumption need to be reduced in Eastern Europe.

    • Communist past, i.e. highly polluting industries
    • Tobacco, vodka, sliwowitz...
    • Prevailing Westerly winds: polluted air generated in the West kills people in the East!
    • Improved healthcare systems: good enough to deliver accurate assessments of death causes (many lethal carcinoms would have been unnoticed previously) — not yet good enough to ensure efficient care.
    • AND: poor reliability of stats, as exemplified by the current COVID crisis.
