This is from US govt. travel page:
I as a young woman would certanly not go there on my own. You're Georgian, and a male. Not exactly unfamiliar with the region.Terrorist attacks and risk of civil unrest continue throughout the North Caucasus region including in Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Dagestan, Stavropol, Karachayevo-Cherkessiya, and Kabardino-Balkariya. Local gangs have kidnapped U.S. citizens and other foreigners for ransom. There have been credible reports of arrest, torture, and extrajudicial killing of LGBTI persons in Chechnya allegedly conducted by Chechen regional authorities.
Do not attempt to climb Mount Elbrus, as travelers must pass close to volatile and insecure areas of the North Caucasus region.

Compared to Latin America, Balkans is as safe as a Kindergarten. Maybe if you get lost and enter a gypsy zone but even so if you get some street smarts nothing will happen to you.

Every big city has its dangers if you are in wrong places in wrong times.

Belgrade in 1990s was one of the most dangerous cities in Europe. Crime rate was high because it was easy to get weapons due to war circumstances, and because of poverty which was also product of war, sanctions, disappearance of middle class, and disintegration of Yugoslavia.
In 1990s guys like Knele were heroes of many youths https://mafia.wikia.org/wiki/Aleksan...ezevic_(Knele)
In the last few years in Belgrade started reckoning of two Montenegrin criminal clans, and vibe of 1990s has returned to some degree. Still is't a joke in comparison with 1990s.

We drove trough Balkans many times, from Nis it became uncomfortable regarding infrastructur and there were always warnings of our car insurance that we must be careful with petrol stations and thiefs. Only one time we drove trough Bulgaria and this was our first time when we went to Turkey with the car, we really repented it. After this experience we drove trough Greece and its a great country, we even stayed there every time in Kavala.
But tbh i don’t know how this places look nowadays and i didn’t want to provoke somebody, besides of that what i wrote Balkan countries are very beautiful.
