We also call them pelmeņi, but pierogi "pīrāgi" for us means pies (baked, mostly with meat).

original komi-permyak, udmurt, local russian pelmeni first of all are filled with river fish or (sour) cabbage, or mushrooms, or radish, or horsetail. First mentions about pelmeni appeared before potatoes came to Russia, so original pelmeni cant be with potatoes. Meat pelmeni, usually it is beef and pork mix called "ruskie pelmeni".

"Pelmeni" documentary of 1969 by Perm TV channel. Director and interviewer - my grandad. Its actually not only about pelmeni as dish, its like an video essay about life in Komi-Permyak Okrug of Perm Krai

I also love pelmeni in different incarnations - вареники, манты, буузы, равиоли, хинкали.
They go well with sour cream, mayonnaise, grape vinegar, and some strong spirits.

Here vinegar+mustard+black pepper is classic addition to pelmeni. Also here live tatars and many repatriants from Kazakhstan moved here, so manty is popular. In my grandmothers family from Western Siberia, if they had a good hunting for moose, they made big wooden box full of pelmenies and keeped it in the backyard. Try kundyumy somewhere - good thing, some church groceries trading them in the lent period.
