If they weren't, why did they disappear just like that?
What baffles me is they had been in Europe far longer than we have. There are Neandearthal fossils in Europe as old as 400,000 years old, so that means they had to be well adapted to the new European environment, cold climate etc. They had larger brains too. Were they simply outnumbered by Homo Sapiens?
We (homo sapiens) left africa only 40,000 to 50,000 years ago so to me it's surprising Homo Sapiens could become so much more successful in Eurasia despite being newcomers.
