Default Compared to Americans, do Aussies still suffer from cultural cringe viz-a-viz the UK?

My impression is that many more Aussies than Americans still regard the UK as a sort of 'motherland' and thus quite a few try to affect British mannerisms and speech in order to come across as more 'refined' and 'cultured'. Why is this?

Queen Elizabeth II is still Queen of Australia also. Australia is still firmly part of the Commonwealth and Aussies and Poms are very similar in nature, in particular in sense of humour. Much more similar than with Americans.

    Like who? Germaine Greer again?

Anglo-Australians regarding Britain as the motherland is not cultural cringe, it's the opposite. Many older Australians were/are actually quite British in their mannerisms and speech, due to their upbringing.

There is a lot of cultural cringe here but it's not related to Britain, at least not for decades. Whereas in the past Australian newsreaders/tv presenters would put on pseudo English/refined accents, nowadays they have broad, often exaggerated Australian accents.

Leftist urbanites as always look down on lower class white surburbanites, ruralites, bogans etc, and venerate 'cultured' foreigners, wherever they're from.

Well do Australians like to emphasise their separate identity from Britain, or do they consider themselves to be in many ways Britain overseas?

Australians are very interested in UK and they even check UK news. They also tend to visit UK at least once.

Isn't the same also true of many Americans though?

In my knowledge, no. Americans are more interested in India than UK imho.

Nearly all Australians emphasise a separate identity, most Anglo-Australians identify only as Australian (many identify as British/Anglo only ethnically or secondarily), but also most acknowledge the kinship and British heritage of this country (although that is now politically incorrect). The flag is loved and there is no great clamour to become a Republic after the last referendum.

Australians haven't really thought of themselves as 'Britain in the South Seas' since the mid 20th century.

You know God Save the Queen was still the national anthem until 1984?

Well thank heavens I was born that same year to put an end to it.

LOL. Anyway, isn't it true that many Aussie celebrities of various sorts - be they actors, singers or writers - only really feel they have 'made it' when they go abroad to Britain or the US?
