American of Croatian Descent Ancestry Results

My 2nd great-aunt, who is a first generation American (and the sister of my great-grandpa, who was born in Croatia), received her DNA results today from Ancestry. Both of her parents/my 2nd great-grandparents were born in Croatia.

She got:
- 58% Balkans
- 31% Eastern Europe & Russia
- 7% Germanic Europe
- 4% Baltics

Supposedly her father has roots in Austria and Hungary, but I’m not sure how accurate that is. Her mother’s roots are purely Croatian, according to her.

Her father is the one sitting in the middle in the 2nd photo.

Very cool, this is your 2nd great-aunt so I assume she is smth like 90 years old? Great that you could get her tested, was it due to your encouragement? I know my mom never would have done it if I didn't buy her the kit and hound her to death about doing it lol.

She’s in her 80s, almost 90s. And I planted the idea in her head a few years back when I went to visit her, but she decided to do it all on her own. And I’m glad you were able to get your mom tested at least!

What is her father name and surname? Based on that we can conclude what ethnicity he was.
Btw, if he emigrated from Austro-Hungary he was likely written as Austrian or Hungarian on his entry, because of country where he came from (Croatia wasn't indipendant back than). In same manner Croats who emigrated from southern Croatia while it was part of Venetian Republic were written as Italians, despite ethnically they were Croats/Slavs.

My ancestor for example was written as Austrian on his Ellis Island entry despite he was ethnically 100% Croat.

She’s not from Croatia, her parents are though. Her dad was from Zagreb and her mom was from Galdovo. I’ll have to see if she’s on GEDMatch. She doesn’t want me to share her maiden name, so I can’t say her dad’s name, but she doesn’t mind me sharing her mom’s/my 2nd great-grandma’s: it’s Mesić
