Default The Legalization of Homosexuality in Europe : Every Month

Liberal Spain and Turkey in the 19th century?

The Soviet world was much more anti lgbt than the Liberal world.

The last country to legalize homosexuality was Christian Armenia and not Muslim Azerbeijan or some North Caucasian Russian oblast.

Obviously that video sucks. Homosexuality in Spain became, not to be legal but just not a crime, in 1978

In Spain's case, Franco criminalised it very harshly, but before his regime it was tolerated to varying degrees. In Russia's case, the early days of the Revolution saw it legalised, but Stalin banned it again because he saw it as 'bourgeois decadence' and it wasn't legalised again until the fall of the Communist regime.

Homosexuality was a common theme in Ottoman art. There are some kinky homosexual paintings from the Ottoman era.

It's interesting that Russia is so anti-lgbt, one of their most popular bands was Tatu, pretending to be lesbians, and they even sent them to Eurovision. Weak politicians attack LGBT to garner popular support and make up for their incapability to rule properly, because they know that LGBT is marginal and they try to appeal to the majority's sentiments at the expense of individual liberties.

But other Socialist countries of the east Bloc deemed to be USSR satellites had it legalized in the 60's. Were they that much puppets of the USSR?

Depends on the country. I'd actually say the more 'isolationist' regimes in Albania and Romania treated gays (along with many other groups) more harshly than did the more pro-Soviet regimes like Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.

Enver Hoxha's Albania was initially pretty close to the Soviet Union and then it started to split from the Soviet policies and to align with Maoist China, and it split again with China and became more and more isolated. Romania was always a source of trouble and headaches to Kremiln. Ceausescu was much more repressive and "totalitarian" than other Socialist regimes.

The "best" east bloc regimes in Europe were the GDR and Czechoslovakia. Also non alligned Yugoslavia under Tito worked pretty well.
