I agree with the OP. Not just because of the English language, but also how Germanic phenotypes have become what people globally (however erroneously) equate the most with Europe.

English becoming the Lingua Franca is not really a direct result of the fall of the Roman Empire to Germanics, French was considered the Lingua Franca at the beginning of the 20th century. English might have even disappeared in the Middle Ages.
The shift of power to Germanic Europe came after the Reformation, and the cultural dominance of the English speaking peoples since the 19th century.
