Bulgarian president sparks tensions in Skopje

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev’s decision to summon the directors of the security services to discuss measures to protect the rights of Bulgarians in North Macedonia has sparked tensions in Skopje.

North Macedonian media quoted President Stevo Pendarovski and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who accused Radev of interference in the internal affairs of another country.

Both of them underlined that Bulgaria and North Macedonia are NATO members and that it is not a part of the Alliance’s internal procedures for a president to call on security services to respond to alleged violations of citizens’ rights in another member state.

No one’s rights, including those who declare themselves as Bulgarians, have been violated in northern Macedonia, said Zaev.

Radev summoned the security services after he received a letter from the president of the “Ivan Mihailov” Cultural Centre in North Macedonia, as well as complaints from Bulgarians living in North Macedonia, claiming their rights are frequently being violated because they identify as ethnic Bulgarians.. What happened to a Bulgarian in Macedonia a few days ago?

You say we are the oppressors and we oppress Macedonian minorities but when was the last time a Macedonian was beat in Bulgaria?

And why are Bugarashi being beaten? Because you disrespect us as a people, veto us in international fora and discriminate against our people in your country. And now you threaten us. There will be more beatings that's for sure.

You've disrespected and smeared us for a far longer time and you don't see Macedonians in Bulgaria getting jumped and group-beaten on a monthly basis.

Ghegs and Tosks are way more different culturally than Bulgarians and Macedonians are to each other. Slavo Macedonians considering themselves a People distinct from Bulgarians is a purely political/ideological stance and nothing more.
