There was another "hobbit species" in China that died out relatively recently.
I read Floresiensis split from our lineage very early, before Homo Erectus was a thing.
Neanderthals were interesting because they showed characteristics that were progressive and primitive at the same time. They had larger brains than Sapiens but had protuding mouth with a recessed chin and large browridge which looks a bit similar to a chimpanzee.
