2,000-Year-Old Greek Astronomical Calculator: Experts Recreate a Mechanical Cosmos for the World’s First Computer

    March 12, 2021

Researchers at UCL have solved a major piece of the puzzle that makes up the ancient Greek astronomical calculator known as the Antikythera Mechanism, a hand-powered mechanical device that was used to predict astronomical events.

Known to many as the world’s first analog computer, the Antikythera Mechanism is the most complex piece of engineering to have survived from the ancient world. The 2,000-year-old device was used to predict the positions of the Sun, Moon and the planets as well as lunar and solar eclipses.

    The Antikythera Mechanism Secret Solved

    January 17, 2022

The secret of the Antikythera Mechanism, the ancient Greek device discovered in 1901 and regarded as the world’s first computer, has been solved by scientists.

And now — exactly 120 years later — the astounding machine has been recreated once again, using 3-D imagery, by a brilliant group of researchers from University College London (UCL).

Not only is the recreation a thing of great beauty and amazing genius, but it has also made possible a new understanding of how it worked.

World’s first computer, the Antikythera Mechanism, ‘started’ in 178 BC, scientists say

    April 14, 2022

The mysterious Antikythera Mechanism, believed by some to be the world’s first computer, was first “started” on December 22, 178 BC, archaeologists have discovered.

Discovered by sponge divers in a Roman-era shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901, the elaborate ancient computer, which looks like a shoebox-sized contraption with gears and dials on which many tiny inscriptions are written, could predict eclipses and determine when various sports games have occurred, among other functions.
