    Default George Gordon Meade

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Meade

From a Catholic family, he was the son of a merchant agent of the U.S. Government based in Cadiz, where he was apparently ruined by his support for Spain during the Napoleonic wars. His name was Richard Worsam Meade and his mother was Margaret Coats Butler. He was the eighth of 11 children they had.

After his father's death in 1828, the family returned to the United States. George Gordon Meade married another Cadiz woman of foreign origin, Margaretta Sergeant (born in Cadiz in 1804), on December 31, 1840, with whom he had seven children.

According to oral family tradition E-FT155550 comes from a deserter of Napoleon's troops (1808-1813) who stayed in Spain and changed his surname.

Portrait by Vicente López y Portaña, 1815

Richard Worsam Meade (June 23, 1778 – June 25, 1828) was an American merchant and art collector, and the father of Civil War General George Gordon Meade. After growing up in his father George Meade's shipping business, he became successful in his own right in the American–Spanish trade. Meade lived in Cadiz, Spain, from 1803 to 1820, and was the U.S. naval agent there. He became quite wealthy and was one of the first American collectors of European art.
