From a Catholic family, he was the son of a merchant agent of the U.S. Government based in Cadiz, where he was apparently ruined by his support for Spain during the Napoleonic wars. His name was Richard Worsam Meade and his mother was Margaret Coats Butler. He was the eighth of 11 children they had.
After his father's death in 1828, the family returned to the United States. George Gordon Meade married another Cadiz woman of foreign origin, Margaretta Sergeant (born in Cadiz in 1804), on December 31, 1840, with whom he had seven children.
