London Fire Brigade should 'face up' to its culture of racism and misogyny, says chief
March 19, 2021
The London Fire Brigade chief has said his mixed-race daughter may not be welcome in some fire stations, as he called for the organisation to “face up” to its culture of racism and misogyny.
Andy Roe, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) commissioner, this week launched an independent review into its workplace culture and the representation among its workforce.
It comes after an inquest into the death of trainee firefighter, Jaden Francois-Esprit, concluded last month. Mr Francois-Esprit died by suicide in August 2020.
His family were concerned he was being bullied due to his race, adding that he had been mocked about Caribbean food in his packed lunches, the inquest at King’s Cross Coroner’s Court heard.
Coroner Mary Hassell said there was insufficient evidence to link bullying or racism to Mr Francois-Esprit’s death, but raised concerns about his mental health which had gone “undetected by those around him”.
