Battle of Aljubarrota did not alter anything. I think those two battles are very different in the sense that in 1385 Portugal didn't have any empire, Vasco da Gama had not reach India, Camões had not written the Lusiadas, Cabral hadn't reach Brazil, etc. Portugal was relatively young in 1385. If Castille won Aljubarrota i find it difficult to see any resistence in the following years. There was also no Habsburgs in Spain at that time so maybe things would turn out differently.

In 1640 things were totally diferent than in 1385 in terms of national pride. So i think alnortedelsur chose the right battle in the context he was talking about.

What would of Spain if the commies (aka Republicans) had won the civil war?

One possibility is that Spain would have become a communist country for decades, a satellite of the USSR, and would have a similar path than the eastern European countries after the USSR collapse and would be nowadays more nationalist/right wing minded, less tolerant to globalist/ liberal ideas such as mass immigration, LGBT, no border control, etc.

I even opened a thread, in the Spanish sub-forum, regarding that hypothetical scenario, and also speculated the same thing as you. as possible outcome. If I find the link of that thread, I would tell you.

Another possible outcome of Republicans wining the war, however, if that Spain would probably have ended up invaded by Nazi Germany in World War II.

In any case, if Republicans had won the civil war, I don't know if me and my siblings would have been born, because thanks to Franco, my Spanish paternal grandpa (who was Republican) settled in Venezuela with his family fleeing from Franco, and later on, my mom met my Venezuelan dad when she was adult.

It's very possible that if Miguel Da Paz would have survived infancy and inherited the Castillian and Aragonese crowns from his grandparents that Portugal would have ended up dominating the Union. And on the plus side, no Habsburghs.
