Erdogan is smart to leverage off his soft power towards muslim countries. After all he knows he can use turkeys ottoman caliphate historic claim to push that narrative,a sort of make turkey great again slogan. Turkey is rapidly losing influence in its region to other countries like Iran,Saudi arabia,Russia and China. He knows the western block is being bullied right now by china and its new silk trade. Turkey is now making more money and exerting its influence right now more than ever. Especially in turkic countries, muslim world and just recently Africa

I don't live anywhere near Turkey so my opinion is pretty invalid on the matter. I think probably not, it's more of a means to an end for them.
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Erdogan won his first election (2002) with great support from USA, and before that election, his political ban removed because of the pressure from USA.

Idk about Turkeys government, but doesn't your parliament/law makers have all the power though?

Late 90's was an unfortunate period for Turkey. Government was fighting against internal threats (political islam, Gulenists etc) and at the same time trying to integrate into EU. Over this, 99 earthquakes hit industry center of Turkey and economy greatly failed. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_%...mit_earthquake https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_D...zce_earthquake)

After this, government needed new funds to rebuild economy and EU was not interested in providing credits. So, USA (IMF) had an unfortunate influence on Turkish politics. What Usa did? They were about to invade Iraq but secular Turkish government was not supporting this. But Erdogan promised support for Iraq war, which would devastate a stable country and spread millions of immigrants around Europe and all the world. So, USA supported Erdogan... (Supported also Gulenists, another islamist organisation, a back-up for Erdogan)

No, it won't happen. There was always a minority (%1-5 of the population) that wanted sharia. It is just that they can voice their opinion for now. Simply the era of Erdogan is about to end. Whether you like it or not.

Don't worry guys. We will have true Islam and sharia. I wouldn't worry about that much. Things won't change for heterosexual men with muslim background. Generally if you want to fornicate there will be some places to do that I guess. Generally it is overlooked. The only true Islam is in Turkey and there will only be true sharia like Ottoman Empire. So instead of demonizing it, get used to that idea. That would be my only advice for you.
