Regarding the Islamic viewpoint, it is more based on cooperation rather than complete homogenization. The nations and tribes of the world are supposed to work together ("know each other" in the scripture) but not to "become one" in a sense. We are to view each other (Muslims) as brothers and thus "one" but the best way is for Islamic nations to work together to use their individual strength to cancel out each others weaknesses for the benefit of the Ummah, and not to simply become one.
