Sanpaku eyes - prey eyes

I recently came across an interesting Japanese superstition. If one's whites are below the iris (yin sanpaku), that means that one is unlucky, as it was shown with celebrities like: Marylin Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Michael Jackson, Princess Diana, nowadays Billie Eilish etc.
The yang sanpaku are the whites above the iris, like those of Charles Manson. That means that one is a psychopath.
I was pretty unlucky with the yin sanpaku, not because I'm superstitious, but because I think it's an unaesthetic feature.
The reason, why I hate people taking photos of me and the reason I have to squint my eyes, each time I take a selfie. That's my apparent complex.

I went through cropped images of one eye of 367 players in Swedish soccer leagues, and I selected images that appeared to have either form of sanpaku or that almost had either form of sanpaku.

Yin sanpaku is more common than yang sanpaku, and it doesn't necessarily matter that much if it's only minor. But yang sanpaku looks psycho. However both are overall negative features that are associated with high palpebral fissure height.

I don't know if there's a term for it, but another very woggy-looking feature are the kind of Daria eyes where the upper eyelids are droopy so that they cover the upper side of the pupil. It of course depends on pupil size, facial expression, and camera angle. A droopy upper eyelid can reduce palpebral fissure height, which is one way in which low palpebral fissure can be a negative trait. An alternative to measuring palpebral fissure height which avoids it is to measure the distance from the lower eyelid margin to the upper eyelid crease.




The last example in the image above doesn't look that bad because the pretarsal show is low, so the upper eyelid doesn't look droopy. There's just a low distance from the eyebrows to the eyes, which indicates low orbit height.

Males have lower supraorbital rims than females, so among images of the left eye of 161 players in the Swedish men's top-level soccer league, I didn't find any image which clearly showed yang sanpaku. Among the players who came the closest to having yang sanpaku, three out of four players have the subhuman Caucasoid version of a monolid, where they seem to have no supratarsal crease because it has merged with the outline of the eyeball.

This time the morph of players with a large covered area of the upper side of the iris didn't end up looking that bad, because it also includes some players who have Mongoloid-like eye shape or who have relatively low pretarsal show.
