The first group comes to mind. They look more Anglo-Saxon, and I realize that many English people don't have tons of Anglo-Saxon forebears. I would view the second group as English too, but they wouldn't be the first group that comes to mind. I see the first group as more indicative of eastern England, and I see the second group as more indicative of western England (I realize this isn't a universal rule).

First set looks insular Celtic, second set is darker than average. Neither would be my answer since neither fit what I imagine to be distinctly English, but I would vote for the first because there's more people who exist which look like the Redgraves than Jon Snow in England, especially in industrial inner cities here.

Corin and Vanessa Redgrave are picture perfect Keltid-Nords, not Anglo-Saxons. They definitely don't look average for the East of England.

The thing is many of our celebrities - especially the ones who gloss our TV magazines and glamour magazines - actually look like the latter group.

True, there's lot more Atlantid types on TV etc than irl.

All the more ironic, when you consider how in at least half the world's countries, celebrities if anything tend to be lighter than the average of the country or ethnicity in question.

What about middle England or the midlands of England ? A smetling of Celt and Saxon.
