Why did Anthropologists used to think that the Irish and Welsh were mediterranean?

A lot of these old anthopology maps show the Irish and Welsh as Mediterranean, which makes no sense given that they don't look like Southern Europeans at all.

The difference between the British isles and Germany etc.. traditionally is the atlanto-med strain vs alpine.
