That map was drawn by a Wikipedia user btw, it could be wrong. I'll try to find more details on where Cvijić and Pulevski exactly place the border.
About the southwestern part (Blagoevgrad, Sandanski), did the people there traditionally use the names Macedonia and Macedonian for themselves, or is that more recent?

Yes, there is no single Shop dialect. Most of the so called Shops would speak E-type Western Bulgarian dialect, while other Shops like the people from Trn and Breznik would speak transitional dialect. The Torlaks also speak transitional dialect but they are separate from the Shopi in our ethnography. The Torlaks are tied linguistically to the Shopi from Trn and Breznik (on the basis of their transitional dialects) and I guess that the Serbian ethnography is lumping those 3 groups together and call them Shopi. I suspect that might be the case for the slight misunderstanding. The entire topic is really political unfortunately and both sides made really bad claims in the past so probably that is the reason for some of the discrepancies.
