IMO it does not surprise me that MENA and South Asia are confused for each other when it comes to cultural connotations. Just look at the following:
-Music sounds very similar between the two, think of snake charmers with that "eastern" twang
-Clothing also is very similar, lots of flash, shiny apparel and gold jewelry
-Both use headcloths and other types of rags
-Both of the women dance in revealing lingerie to their husbands
-Both are heavily honor-and-shame based societies
-Both are extremely religious and very spiritual
They seem to be almost cousins on so many levels, that the things they have in common can't be mere coincidences.
So why do so many Indians get offended when you confuse them for MENA? Obviously they are not, but why are they surprised when people confuse the two as the same?
