Isn't the Southern Gentleman just an American variant of his English cavalier ancestors? Presumably low rent Aristocratic and polished and well mannered. I only ask because a recent experience where an English couple visiting here asked me about best brunch spots in the area, and I gave them some suggestions. They responded with "You're quite the Southern gentleman, it's refreshing!". They said this in a way that made me to believe it was novelty for them , or something to which they aren't accustomed. Are the manners not the same in England? Is the Southern Gentleman more English than the English themselves? I thought the Southern Gentleman way was the same as the English cavalier, but maybe I'm wrong. Is there any real difference between the two?
