I am no expert on France but I would guess at least not in an official capacity but maybe an underground la cosa nostra black nobility.

Well there are still many descendants of nobles in France.

But being a noble is not recognyze by the state, you haven't any more right or differences than other citizens. They can't use their title in documents or in others.

According to the latest stats there are between 3,500 - 4000 families of authentic noble lineage in France.

Yes, why not. Napoleon created a new one after the revolution, the "Imperal Nobility" granted to the highest ranks of military, economic and culltural spheres, 400 families were part of it in the 19th. Out of nearly 18 000 families before the Revolution, about 2500 survived, adding to the imperials.

Not all with "De_" surnames are aristocracy but a good share are. Usually we can tell which surname sounds noble, or has a high chance of it.

I am much more interested, how much of medieval nobility was still a
nobility in XVIII century, and how many of all of them is alive today.

I made a similar thread about Serbia. You can share some stuff there.

Precisely you mean: that 2500 were recognized by Napoleon and rest not, OR that 15500
were totaly wiped out, and all who survived (i.e. 2500) were recognized by the Empire?

The real French nobility was deposed of before Napoleon by Constantine and the conspiring mayors of the palace who exploited the trusting nature of the Merovingian Dragons. Replacing the true nobility , in Europe , everywhere the cheating peasants lied, cheated and poisoned their way to the top. That is why the masses lost trust in the Aristocracy which lead to the French revolution. etc...
