What a waste of money, wonder why NATO countries spend money on this crap. You basically are part of organisation which is about collective defense. Therefore spending so much money on those jets instead of investing in infrastructure/economy etc is complete nonsense. Just the cost of mainintaing those jets is horendous + imagine just flying around with that jet for a short session costs 4000 euros in fuel.

I agree with you, Rafales are a very good planes but I don´t think that Croatia needs them.

For a country like Croatia 12 such planes is an unnecessary expense, and a huge complication.

It would be a better option to buy ground-based anti-aircraft systems or improve existing ones to supply the ability to shoot down aggressor aircrafts and cheap ground attack aircraft with CAS capability, for those purposes.

Please, don't be ridiculous. If you have no own AF, you pay others for air policing. NATO won't protect anyone, that's a nonsense and I only believe in our capabilities. We are sovereign state and need to have own capable and ready army.
By the way, all NATO members are obliged to spend certain amount of GDP on defense.

Croatia absolutely needs them to train and prepare next generations of pilots. And Croatia isn't surrounded by Canada and Switzerland, but by hostile enemy states.
We are very satisified with this decision. Also, we have huge airspace compared to size of country, due to owning half of Adriatic sea.

I'm just saying that in a country with such tiny strategic depth, either you always keep planes in the air constantly, which is a huge waste of money, or in case of external aggression, within seconds of detecting enemy planes, all your expensive ones will be destroyed without starting the engines.

These aircraft, even second-hand, are very expensive to maintain and operate.

Anyway, it is your decision and as sovereign state, you have the right to do what you want.

Rafale is an excellent plane, congratulations.

Ofcourse they will be used. It opens up a lot of possibilities for air policing smaller neighbouring states who are in NATO and have no own AF.
Btw, there were 3 other offers, American one was too expensive for a plane inferior to Rafale, Swedes offered old model of Gripens who can't be upgraded and Israel offered old crap.

So only a fool would chose something else.

It's very multi purpose so probably a good choice to go ahead with a new fleet.

Any of those options were better than what you had, in terms of capabilities I mean.

I suppose that once you have the Rafales, we will see 4 of them deployed in the Baltic.
