An Australian police officer may have been involved in a brawl at a Bali nightclub in which AFL coach Dean Laidley and some of his family were injured.
Three bouncers from the Bounty nightclub in the Kuta Beach area were still in custody on Tuesday after they were arrested following the fight last Friday.
Laidley required stitches after being hit in the head with a bottle during the brawl, while his son's jaw was broken and other family members including women were also injured.
The former North Melbourne coach, visiting the Indonesian resort island with his family for his daughter's wedding, described the attack as "completely unprovoked".
One of the investigating officers with the Kuta Police has told AAP the club's security staff claimed a fight had already broken out between two groups of male customers when they arrived on the scene.
A security guard had also said one of the men involved in the brawl was an Australian police officer.
The Australian Federal Police said they were "not aware of an AFP member being involved in the incident."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also has been contacted regarding the allegation.
"Security found two groups were fighting, both in a big number," the police officer said on Tuesday.
"According to security guards, the situation was difficult and the guests were physically big.
"According to them, one of them was an Australian police."
The Kuta officer said some of the people involved had been "beaten black and blue".
He said it appeared the security guards might have been trying to separate the two groups.
"The security guards were only trying to separate them. But I think the situation got out of control and they took it too far."
The investigation was continuing, involving possibly three more people, and the police wanted to talk to another suspect again, he said.
It's understood Australian consular officials are now involved.
Laidley said the incident had ruined what should have been one of the best days of his life.
"It's gone from probably one of the best days of my life when you're walking your daughter down the aisle, to something that I would never have dreamed would have happened to my family and now my extended family," he told ABC radio.
"What broke out was not very nice.
"My son got a broken jaw, a couple of the cousins ... their noses have been broken, lots of cuts and lacerations.
"Physically, there's broken bones and cuts and stitches which will all heal, but mentally some of us struggle."
Laidley said his group had only been at the bar for an hour when bouncers, for no apparent reason, attacked family members on the dance floor.
"We had our faculties about us. We'd only been there for an hour and all we know is our sons were set upon," he said.
"We've got no idea about what happened. We're trying to find out ourselves.
"The police, from what we can gather, are telling us that these things are set up all the time."
Laidley said he and some family members had returned to Melbourne, while others remained in Bali to assist police with their investigation.
