Haven't taken the Metro here on this city yet, when I do I'd let you know.

Is there a proper railway network in the DR as such?

Only here in the capital. The rail system in the interior is only for transporting sugarcane on some mills still operating, the ones not on private hands, cuz the public ones didn't survive privatization and neoliberalism in the 90's.

Similar to Colombia - by the 1980's only the slow tourist train between Bogota and Santa Marta survived, and even that was closed down a few years ago. In fact, I'd say the "Dr Beeching phenomenon" is a good example of how capitalism can actually reverse development and interconnectivity.

The ironic thing is that it was Leonel Fernandez, the president responsible for neoliberalism here, who basically came up with the Metro system. I used to be opposed to it initially, at least, being underground, due to the seismic problem of this island, but now that I have seen how effective it has been in decompressing the transit on some parts, I have to admit it was a good call. As far as the images that I have seen about the stations and the wagons, it seems to be modelled after the one in Toulouse.

Well all the new metro systems, tram systems, Crossrail and High Speed trains won't compensate for the damage that had been done in the 1960's to our railway network. South Wales was particularly badly hit, because many of our lines were highly dependent on the already-declining coal industry.

    Before 1961

The most iconic station in Australia is Flinders St in Melbourne, but it's not that nice inside and always packed, it's mainly the facade.

The other major station across the city is Southern Cross (formerly Spencer St), which is modern and bland, but nice and spacious inside.

    Mo-oka Railway Station, Japan

Nine out of ten concerns are completely unfounded.
