Calgary police, city unveil details of $16M to reform crisis response

June 4, 2021

A year after the murder of George Floyd in the U.S. and other stories of police brutality ignited massive marches calling for justice, city officials announced details for funding alternative crisis response.

In the wake of demands to defund the police and instead put money toward preventive social services, the Calgary Police Service suggested last September they’d be willing to reallocate part of their budget. Chief Mark Neufeld said the force would make a financial commitment to non-profits and social service agencies better equipped to deal with mental-health and addictions crisis calls.
