I've been several times to Hungary and while I had a good time there and found Budapest to be an impressive city, I didn't feel much connection to the place. Hungarians are more like other Central Europeans in character.

depends on the region maybe. I found it quite alien although Italy is my favourite place to visit, I even speak the language. for sure there's differences between regions in Romania as well, I see it between Bucovina (where I am from) and Moldova (mom and wife from there) for example, and comparing villages and villagers, not cities, which are more levelled across the country

Albanians are probably somewhere between Hungarians and Ukrainians.

I understand Romanians who find themselves to have more in common with Southern Euros but I personally cannot relate with them.
