Default Which of these scenarios would you prefer?

    (1) A railway station with several trains an hour to your capital city but not many connections to most other parts of the country.
    (2) A railway station with few if any direct trains to your capital city but several connections to other parts of the country.

Yes, that is one reason why I'd find it hard to live in a Latin American country - they don't usually have proper railway networks.

For me 1. As long as there’s connections to another major city which has in turn connections to other parts of the country. I don’t need direct connections to far off places, and don’t mind getting off somewhere and changing, but a direct route to the capital is pretty invaluable imo. A major cities train station will have both 1 and 2 anyway.
