I like the republic in the old republic era. In the prequels the republic suck, no army? Then trusting some dodgy clones to be your army. Then you have the rebels who are basically terrorists. Then the republic in the new trilogy who AGAIN don’t have an army and get beaten by one shot from a giant planetary laser. For this reason it’s gotta be the empire because at least they’re stable and not dumb enough to get rid of their army every time they control things.

The Republic didn't even had a standard army, trusting that only 10,000 Jedi and the different planetary forces of the constituent systems would keep the peace while continuing expanding. Do you know why the CIS was created in the beginning? It was because many planets were fed up with the Galactic Republic due to the high taxes that the Republic imposed on trade routes and due to the great corruption of the Senate, tensions grew until they separated and the Republic did not like that and declared war. Unfortunately they as well as the Republic itself were manipulated by Palpatine and Count Dooku, this side was the worst suffered not only by the war of the clones but also by the empire punishing them after they loss the war.

Exactly the CIS was a group of planets that wanted to become independent from the Republic.

I have no doubt the Galaxy was doing better before the Empire, Palpatine only brought opression, violence, discrimination, bilions of innocents lifes lost in planets destructions, other bilions lost on wars, trillions of money spent on wars and in their shit star fleet that only exist to be exploded and not to mention their shit and expensive Death Star destroyed by a X wing lol.

Also their shit ATAT and ATST, pure waste of money, corruption and money laundry... Also the economy is totally directed to war and low quality military things which left other areas totally shit. I dont even doubt the general economy is lower on Empire compared with Republic times. So yes, I consider the Empire as sort of a backtracking like a mixture Nazi Germany and USSR, but worser.

PS: I see the Republic as more or less the European Union, its not perfect, but better by far.

Indeed, Palpatine's rise is something to be studied in real life politics as he went from being a rich and humble senator to chancellor / president to leverage his political campaign during a war to win public favor and then finally become a dictator with followers.
