No, they weren't. The Republic didn't even had a standard army, trusting that only 10,000 Jedi and the different planetary forces of the constituent systems would keep the peace while continuing expanding. How idiotic can a system like that be? Specially when you had crime syndicates like the Hutts or Black Sun pushing things on the border systems.

The Clone Army of the Republic was very good, the bad thing was that the cost of producing and training them was very high, also the factory was in Kamino if they destroy that planet goodbye to the army, also the clones could only use them for a very short time due to they had accelerated growth.

I have no doubt the Galaxy was doing better before the Empire, Palpatine only brought opression, violence, discrimination, milions of innocents lifes lost in planets destructions, other milions lost on wars, trillions of money spent on wars and in their shit star fleet that only exist to be exploded and not to mention their shit and expensive Death Star destroyed by a X wing lol.

Also their shit ATAT and ATST, pure waste of money, corruption and money laundry... Also the economy is totally directed to war and low quality military things which left other areas totally shit. I dont even doubt the general economy is lower on Empire compared with Republic times. So yes, I consider the Empire as sort of a backtracking like a mixture Nazi Germany and USSR, but worser.

The Republic has no leg to stand on regarding corruption, otherwise outfits like the Trade Federation and the Corporate Sector wouldn't have come into being.

PS: I see the Republic as more or less the European Union, its not perfect, but better by far.

I like the republic in the old republic era. In the prequels the republic suck, no army? Then trusting some dodgy clones to be your army. Then you have the rebels who are basically terrorists. Then the republic in the new trilogy who AGAIN don’t have an army and get beaten by one shot from a giant planetary laser. For this reason it’s gotta be the empire because at least they’re stable and not dumb enough to get rid of their army every time they control things.

You'd think that after having gigantic wars defending themselves from the Sith and the Mandalorians would have taught them anything about being prepared and all, but it seems the Republic chose to ditch those experiences to the wastebin and keep trudging on to perdition. Same with the Jedi, which also had their own armies and space navy (and jurisdictional independence from the senate), but gave all of that away and put themselves at the mercy of politicians. Murphy's law in a galactic scale right there.

Republic was similar as the empire, only that this pretend to have democracy but it was very corrupt and totalitarian, the planets that were far from the nucleus (capital of the republic) the taxes were higher, I am amused as in the movies and series they put a the CIS as evil but in some books where they explain more about their history and political context you change and you don't see them as evil, in the CIS there were also anarchists.
