Hungarian climate is typically continental, which means pronounced seasons with a cold winter and a hot summer. Both continental and mediterranean climates belong to the temperate climate zone.
Btw June July and August months are warmer in Budapest than in San Francisco even though SanFran has mediterranean climate and Budapest doesn't, but it doesn't mean anything cuz many places with continental climate are warmer than San Francisco during summer.
I think hortobágy just belongs to the steppe belt. Steppe/grassland is another characteristic of continental climate.

Did you read my prev. comment? I said many thing:
Do you think the palm trees can survive the winter in a continental zone? These palm trees are very new thing at the Balaton, i have talked with olders and they said it. Almost every day in this summer the temerature was between 35-45 celsius. Have you every been to such areas what are close to Tisza and Donau? The ground is very sandly. Hungary will be such med country like Italy or coastal Croatia.Hungary is also med country (not joke), the winter is such mild that the palm trees can survive it near the Lake Balaton. The summer is very hot like it the tropics (average 34-35 celsius), the Hortobány in the Alföld is basically a half desert, when i have been there i saw only sand and grass. I have no idea why Hungary is still belong to temperate climate zone.
