Indeed, after 1860 São Paulo skyrockted, their growth was insane with immigrants from everywhere in Brazil and outside Brazil. Nowadays, the state is the most populous area of Americas with 47 milion people (you probably know that).

Yes, São Paulo was prepared to be big, it was the industrial hub of Brazil so much so that the state of São Paulo has a bigger economy than all the other countries in South America together, only Argentina used to have a bigger economy than the state of São Paulo, but you must know what happened to the economy of our Hermanos Argentines.

Also look how Paraná and Santa Catarina were depopulated, only Rio Grande do Sul had a significant number of colonials there.

It was a time where almost all brazilians were east of Santos and North of Rio/Santos. Minas Gerais with 2 milion people was a colossus.

That's true, the Asian Mongoloid imput in the US is significantly higher than in Brazil.

That link you posted shows us that, to most Brazilians, race is simply a matter of skin colour, that's why you have so many people in that census identifying as "yellow", when they are colonial pardo Brazilians.

And most Asians are only concentrated in two states, São Paulo and the North of Paraná. A minority is found in the states where many people from northern Paraná have migrated. Like Rondonia, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso.

There are those who say that the Brazilian government encourages European immigration not necessarily to "whiten" the country, but to populate these unpopulated areas, because as you said there was literally no one in these areas,Santa Catarina only had people in the capital, the interior of the state was entirely populated by immigrants, Paraná the same thing and other places too, passing from Goiás it was practically unpopulated, so much so that I mentioned the difficulty that the people responsible for the census had to count the number of indigenous in the north of the country, finally, only with Getulio Vargas in the 30's, that we had our "march to the west" so to speak, with the foundations of Goiania, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Palmas and later Brasilia.

I think it was both: Euro immigration was promoted to populate areas of the country with low population, like the South, and in this case the government feared that the Castilians would try to anex it to their domains, but also to whiten the country.

Many intelectuals, including people in Brazil government, endorsed eugenics ideals with a racist conotation, which even looked down on the importation of yellow race immigrants.
