Yeah, I believe the terms may have shifted around through the times. Nowadays, in everyday language, people like Barney Gumble are commonly called missbrukare (which means abuser in Swedish) or A-lagare rather than alkoholister. The word alcoholic is more used when referring to dependency, like Anonymous Alcoholics etc. But I think that in much of the professional field, they prefer to call them alkoholberoende (alcohol dependency) and alkoholmissbruk (alcohol abuse), and avoid alcoholism.

    It's cultural, not genetic imo.

Pretty obviously LUX_Loschbour (WHG) related. (Kidding)

The shown figures look cultural but I think that there is a lot of cultural below-threshold-of-"drinking" consumption that in sum notably affects these figures and nevertheless doesn't exactly reflect the topic that we are talking about. Also, I'm not sure about how these figures are determined. Can bought in Luxemburg wine by neighbors be distingushed from the consumption of Luxemburgians when such transfers are free and not cought within the EU? Can the alcohol consumption of Northern European tourists in Spain be distinguished from the consumption of Spaniards? On what basis is the consumption of Russians determined?

Both wine and quality spirits are better than beer. Btw 3 glasses of nice red dry/semi-dry wine is the best measure in my opinion, one 1l bottle for two

I mean ye but, substance use is usually impulsive to get a high, while alcoholism is usually anxiety driven, because the calming effect etc. There is a study that if there is an alcoholic male in the close family, the chance is much more for the kids to become abusers too later. So back to the difference between abuse and alcoholism is, I meant that the pronesness to abuse and proneness to become alcoholic is somewhat different.

Its cultural too. Alcohol abuse has a culture in northern countries, while when someone thinks about the mediterraen they much likely think about someone with a small glass of wine.

AFAIK there is a positive correlation between abuse and mental disorders like ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism and schizophrenia.
