I'm not Brit, but I'm certain that not so long ago it used to be the Irish.

I know. TA is full of pan Europeanists who think every European immigrant is perfect; but Poles (and nothing against Poland as a country) integrate horribly here, and much worse than say British Indians or even Nigerians.

Yeah the Irish certainly didn't enjoy that much White privilege for much of their history in Britain. (The US is another matter, of course). Until the 1960's, shop signs would commonly say "No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish".

Wonder if the irony wasn't lost to those Victorian types that they were romanticizing Celtic folkways and doing revivalism while spitting on the kin of said folks at the same time.

In my experience the Romanians are even more poorly-integrated still (and I mean ethnic Romanians, not just Gypsies). But of course, we mustn't offend against the sacred doctrine of whiteness, where even a drunk and semi-literate Latvian beggar is still seen as preferable to a Sri Lankan millionaire with a PhD in neuroscience.

That never happened here in the modern era. Where is Grace O'Malley when you need her?

That's what I meant - the Irish have always been welcomed in the US (in part because of their whiteness, but not just that) in a way that really wasn't true for a long time in Britain.
