Bart De Wever, the president of NVA party (separatist Flemish party, 1st party in Flanders), hopes Flanders will be reunified with the Netherlands.

“They would be one of the strongest economies in the world. The ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam could merge and become the front door of North-Western Europe’s economy.

Flanders and the Netherlands used to form a unity, but the fall of Antwerp at the time of the Eighty Years’ War, in 1585, brought it to an end.

If it seems unthinkable, federalism was also unthinkable in Belgium in the 60’, but it became reality in the 70’.

If I could die as a Southern Dutch, I would die much happier than as a Belgian”.

The Balkanization of Belgium sounds very intersting, maybe the effect of recent migrations.

What difference is the Dutch Flanders going to make? They basically share an open border and a similar wage.

I am not against this, but I am neither against a Reunification of all the Netherlands. BeNeLux as a country. I deem it unrealistic the latter. Personally I am moving to the Netherlands to avoid the division in Flemish society like that. Sure there are problems in the Netherlands as well, but it's liberating to me nonetheless to be a Belgian in the Netherlands.

I wonder what a Francophone Belgian who likes France thinks about this.

I agree with him, belgium overall feels like an "artificial" country and flemish tend to be very irritated when we do not speak their language. The problem is that he probably wants Brussels to also become part of the Netherlands which I don't think is in line with what its inhabitants want (90% are french speakers). Wallonia should become a french department and brussels should also be part of France but I don't see how that would work. Brussels would become like a french enclave inside the Netherlands lol
