Mostly located in the western Venezuelan llanos, the state of Barinas has a population of nearly 1 million inhabitants, and an area surface 35,200 square Kilometers (13,600 sq miles). Its capital, Barinas city (Ciudad Barinas), had a population of 353,442 according to the 2011 census.
It limits to the north with the states of Cojedes, Portuguesa and Trujillo, to the east with Guarico, to the south with Apure, and to the west with the states of Merida and Tachira.
Most of the state belong to the western Venezuelan llanos, though it also occupies great part of the eastern outskirts of the Venezuelan Andes.
