    Default Are U.S. Americans mutts?

I've always heard that americans of european ancestry are mutts at this point, of no predominant ancestry beyond europe as a whole. But is this really true? My own family tree on both sides is about 90% British or Irish, it's a little harder to break down the exact ratio of irish/scottish/english/welsh etc. because of how far back they came over although I figure it's about 60-70% English. All of my ancestors were living in the United States by the time Civil War broke out, and of those more than 90% were in Virginia by 1780, and they just stayed there. The remaining 10% is german and dutch, there might also be some others way back. Would you consider that a mutt mix? How common is it? I haven't found a good study on this so far.

Don't know much about 'muricans but I hope this map will help a bit:

It seems like Eastern Coast is inhabited mostly by people of WASP and Irish ancestry, while central and western states are more dominated by Americans of German and other later immigrant European descent. Interestingly, most Whites in Louisiana claim French heritage, and it used to be a French colony before 19th century...

I suppose that protestants and catholics didn't really mix that much before 20th century so WASP families probably remained quite pure, or perhaps only a little mixed with Germans and other Northwestern Europeans.

This is really a math question and people who suck at math have a strong tendency to personalize hence you talking about yourself here. It depends on the mix such as a scandinavian , Welsh and Irish mix might be Scottish, a German/Irish/English mix would approximate middle England etc....

I doubt you could figure that kind of fine grained stuff out from a census though since they are not DNA tests and some DNA tests or analysis or politically motivated bullshit , anyway.

I guess, I don't know but Americans are more mutts than Australians I would guess.

Remove the Italian and you just made a new Anglo-Saxon mix (British, German, Irish) that is akin to the smelting of Saxon and Celt in middle England.

Maybe I didn't phrase the question right. I guess what i mean is, does the average American have a majority of ancestry, say 75% or more, from one area? Even just large areas like eastern central europe, or Iberia. Or is it really tons and tons of regions all combined.

I would say most are a good mix of NW European (like myself) But you do have individuals like Toddy who are of pure colonial stock, especially in the the south and bible belt area.
