Parts of the North of England resisted Anglicanism for a long time indeed, and recusant communities stayed alive until the present day. With the banning of Welsh as a liturgical language, it could be the case that it was much harder for the Welsh to resist reform since the English royalty/parliament had great control over the political and religious situation there.

Catholicism is very hierarchical and ornate. Welsh culture has always prized egalitarianism and simplicity - hence the rise of the Methodist and Baptist chapels.

True, though are the French not also a very egalitarian people? i always saw Wales as having aspects of both North European and South European culture, sort of a mixture if you will but probably verging more on N European more obviously.

French people love their Revolutions from time to time, but ultimately they are just as much if not more into pomp and ceremony as the English are.

Yeah, I think it is "coincidence," that Protestantism marks "the germanic countries."
I think there are too many variables at play on that matter, historically through time, and too much complication, than to assume choice of religion depends upon a union with "regional character," and is thus, a natural "given" for an area of earth.
