Pre U.S. Civil War ancestry ratio

I just had a concerning idea, and I want to hear your thoughts. About what portion, do you think, of U.S. citizens can trace all or most of the ancestry to before the Civil War? It has to be a majority of european descended americans at the least, in my mind.

Colonial stock. I was able to on my dads side. Mothers side had much more recent European ancestry, I wasn't able to get as far with hers.

I have the feeling that not only the South's numbers were affected by the fighting as far as people descended from original colonials is concerned. Even though the North ended up steamrolling its way to victory, it's no less true that the South killed the most in absolute numbers, and it was after the war that the greater migration wave to the country would happen.

A minority no doubt...the great waves of immigration were after that. Perhaps in some southern states is balanced or the majority.

I don't know but 40% of Whites would sound like a reasonable figure.

Best way to work it out would be through ethnic data, given that the Civil War era marks the beginning of mass continental immigration, and the vast majority of British Americans are from colonial stock. Could also distinguish pre-1840s and the mass immigration of Irish.

My guess is 1/3 for the whole country...100-120M tops...and that's counting with around 30M blacks descendants from slaves.

I'm not sure about "steamrolled". The war lasted for four to five years when some nitwits thought that it would last for four to five days.

It's likely a majority in most regions, from Jamestown to Plymouth to the Midwest to the Wild West, and intermarriage just increased it. The South holds a monopoly on false stereotypes, but they don't a monopoly on colonial stock.
