It's obvious how this confusion appears in English, by simple English derivation rules: the country of Romani people: Romania, and they must speak Romanian. It's fucking stupid that this was allowed to slip into official documents. But it wasn't stupid, it was done on purpose, like the earlier similar bullshit: confusing Bohemians with gypsies.
Romanians could also change their name into vlach, or dacian or competing words. I dont see a problem.

It’s important to say, that on upcoming 8 April we will mark our national day. It’s disrespectful from Non Profit organisations to claim ,,international “ Roma day. We are one Nation, with one race for which we have paid huge price during WWII and with one language rooted to Hindi. We are the Romani nation. - Michael Daduc The Roma Nation Movement

Do we want a situation where we can no longer choose the heating system, but we can choose the gender? Hardly likely! The name "Romanian" was already taken when "Romani" was chosen.

Do you want respect? Earn it. Don't pretend to be someone else.

Romani has very different origins and etymology then romanian and in many languages doesnt even sound similar

serbian: rom vs. rumun, german roma vs. rumäne etc.

I dont know in french, or other languages, english is not the only official language of the EU the EU has many official languages, im sure romani dont pretend to be romanians.

If romanians dont like to be confused with roma because of the similarity of the words they should change their name, not expect the roma to change their name, and it is not the same name just similar, it would be different if it were the same name and the romani copied the name with the same meaning and etymology and origins etc.
