Variable:
In a total of 33 of the longer poems, the bards who composed the sagas gave physical descriptions of 67 early Icelandic persons, all important and drawn mostly from the noble class. Of these 54 were called large or tall, and only 3 medium sized. In regard to hair quantity, 8 out of 9 men were said to have long hair, and one thick. Six out of seven men had curly hair, and one straight. The following hair colors were observed for 19 males: gray 2, white 1, golden blond 2, blond 3, red 3, light brown 1, brown 4, black 3. One female was given black hair. Of three beard colors noticed, two were red and one gray. One man had blue eyes, and two women black. Although these observations do not form a statistically valid series or a random sample, yet they may be regarded as ample proof that the ancestors of the Icelanders were of variable pigmentation. Since the persons described were all of high rank, the chances are that most of them were pure Norwegians, and that the pigmentation map of western Norway was not very different a thousand years ago from what it is today.

I guess you have never seen a true ''white'' skinned person in your life, I'm type II and as you can see from my avatar i am milkish white skinned with a pinkish undertone and i burn very easly, i can get a very slight tan if i try hard and use sunscreen, i also have green/hazel eyes and light brown/dark blond hair with redish higlights and yet i'm not the fairest phototype you can get, type I skin is basically albino with 0 pigmentation in skin, and completelly covered in freckles and usually pale blue/green eyes, my aunt has this phototype for istance.
If you compare a typical scandinavian (like dolph lundgren, type III) you would see he is much more tanned and bronze looking than me.
In brazil the average skin type is like IV/V and even VI is common, so a person with skin type III would be seen as ''pale''.

I can't get as dark as dolph lundgren, i would get several suburned if i try to.
I think i'm a solid 2 leaning more towards I than II.
Note i'm litteraly white with a slight pink undertone.
here is a comparison with a non-tanned skin type IV, which is the average skin tone in brazil.
No way i'm dark as lundgren, as kid i had lighter hair than Dolph Lundgren which gradually darkened.
If i would spend a lot of time under the sun my hair would be similar colour to Lundgren, but since i'm photosensitive i should avoid sun expsoure.
This is how my hair look in sunlight and it is clearly light brown with redish undertones.
